At the table: Darren Shaddick

We had the great privilege of working with illustrator Darren Shaddick to bring the story of Batch 2 to life. Darren documented the process of how the plastic was sourced, shredded and turned into handles for the knife.

We managed to sit down with him and ask him some questions. Enjoy!

Take us back to the beginning, where are you from and how did you get into illustration?

I am from North Devon and I got into illustration after I had decided to pursue something I actually enjoyed after flunking two miserable years of A-levels. I joined an Art & Design course which opened eyes to the world of illustration.

It's been amazing for us to work with you telling the story of Batch 2. What aspects did you enjoy most of the project?

It has been a lot of fun! Being at home more often has given me the chance to take up cooking and I thoroughly enjoy it. I’ve never been so passionate about food, and working with Allday feels perfectly aligned. Chopping vegetables is probably my favourite part of the cooking process so getting the chance to illustrate this was definitely what I enjoyed most.

What was the last meal you cooked up?

A Chicken Shawarma.

You are creating some of my favourite work and really at the cutting edge. How do you get inspiration for your work?

Thanks! That’s very kind. I get a lot of inspiration from films, experiences, fashion and artists such as Saul Steinberg and René Magritte. I pick up certain things I like from them all and they sort of merge together within my work.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I try to get up as early as I can and get to my desk, usually working either for Exeter Phoenix or any other various projects. I’ll cook myself something in the evening and either continue drawing for myself or watch some films afterwards.

What exciting projects do you have lined up?

I’ve just finished some really fun and quick projects with The Washington Post and The New York Times. The latter of which actually mentioned the work I had done with Allday in their email.

I’m really excited for a project I’ve recently done with a dream client which will be out very soon, hopefully. I will keep you posted!
